Baboons seem to be on the move to take over South Africa’s Cape Peninsula. The animals natural habit has been shrinking so troops have been coming into cities to find easy food.
These monkeys are not shy about climbing on roofs, stealing from cars, or even going in houses to see what they can get their hands on. Because the baboons are so destructive many times people just want to shoot them. But, advocacy groups there are trying to teach people how to handle getting the baboons to move back to their own land.
CNN has a nice 3 minute video that shows a little of what these human residence are up against – South Africans battle baboons in city streets
Just remember that these primates can weigh up to 90 pounds and they have pretty good sized teeth. If I lived there, I think I would do my best to avoid getting to close them.
ps. In the video they show a baboon with a stolen cell phone. Wonder what the phone provider would say if you argued about paying your cell bill because baboons stole your phone & called party lines? ;-)
