Many of us have had a troublesome commute do to a part of the highway being shut down. Normally we expect that there has been a wreck of some kind. Today drivers along the 210 Freeway near Duarte, California had about a 30 minute delay due to the road being shut down to avoid an accident.

It seems a 250 pound black bear had been wandering around neighborhoods in that area and so of course the Department of Fish and Game were called out to help get the bear back into the woods.

Well, like with any good bear…it was up in a tree until they scared it enough to come down. Then the bear took deputies for a little goose chase. Sure they got bear cornered but, it jumped a fence and headed off…right to the freeway where it dodged cars as it crossed to the median. The highway was then shut down as authorities used a helicopter to try and scare the poor confused animal off the road. They eventually got the bear to run off of the roadway and the side bushes between the helicopter and shooting into the bushes with bean bags.

Finally after climbing a 40′ tree and holding its ground in the stand off it came down and went to a flood control channel where it was darted and hauled off to the foothills.

Yes, they made sure the bear recovered and wandered off on its merry way. This whole bear adventure lasted from 2am until a little after 10am.

I am glad that no one just decided it was to much trouble or to many man hours to chase and capture the bear for release.

For anyone mad because the freeway was shut down…Just imagine going along at 60MPH and hitting a 250 pound bear. Now, that could cause some damage. I think the 30 minute wait would have been better than that.
