I saw a show the other night talking about non native snakes taking over the Everglades. Guess they were not exaggerating. They had said how many constrictors were now killing off the native wildlife. Some of the snakes they showed were huge. I say huge because any snake is big to me.
Today I found Bill banning import of pythons, other snakes moves to Senate In this article they said that they hope the bill to ban the import of all constrictors (into Florida).
Of course some of the Pet Industry is against the bill. They feel it would be better if sellers & traders were more regulated.
Personally, I don’t think it is the legal sellers or traders that are turning these snakes loose. It is likely the owner that for some reason decides not to keep the snake. Some of the people buying these snakes when they are small, do not have the education to take care of them when they get huge. To many people can get a hold of animals they really have no business owning. I know in the Everglades they also have other non native animals that were released by smugglers to keep from getting caught as they brought their goods into small airports.
Do you think they should ban these snakes all together or rely on dealers & owners to handle the problem?
