Holy shark fins! Shark is hitting the fan this week in California.
Assembly Bill 376 is wanting to except as specified, would make it unlawful for any person to possess, sell, offer for sale, trade, or distribute a shark fin, as defined….You can see the bill in full yourself.
If this passes it means that there will be no selling of shark fins in the state of California. Most people may be all for it. Heck, we all know sharks are being killed just for their fins and then their remains tossed in the garbage. From what I understand the fins have no nutritional value many people eat shark fin soup only as a tradition. Is letting our sharks get killed off and disrupting the eco system of our oceans worth it? Not to me but, I’m not Asian and none of my family ate shark fins. Then again, my forefathers ate many things that I don’t…they also hunted buffalo and I don’t…if we go back fare enough, my family roots may have done or ate many things that we have given up (think dinosaurs or slave ships).
Anyway where is this leading? Oh there is at least 1 state senator who is calling the bill banning shark fin sales raciest. He believes the ban is targeting the traditions of Asians. You can see more about what he has to say over at Calif. shark fin bill would ban Chinese delicacy.
I could get in on this and write a very large page but, it would only be my opinion and since I am not Asian then people would just tell me that I do not understand…..
What I do understand is that some traditions need to be changed to sustain life. The Makah Indians in Northwest Washington have limitations on their whale hunts. It was something that they felt was their right because of tradition but, they understood that sustaining the eco system was the right thing to do. I’m sure they know that if you hunt an animal enough…soon there will be NONE! Other Native Americans in the same area have also changed the way the catch salmon and other wildlife. Again, they have put their traditions aside for the good or mother earth.
I think the Senator in the story above should rethink his stand as to how this decision will effect his kids and grand-kids. In fact it will effect the generations around the world.

Haven’t we done enough damage to the earth with our selfish ways?
