I normally link to stories that are about animals that are still alive or at lest alive withing the past 2000 years. Yet, today I found an interesting story about animals that may have been set back to as far as 747 BC.

A team from Cardiff University are now near Cairo, Egypt going through mazes of mummified animals. Not just a few animals were mummified back then. Apparently the one catacomb may hold millions of mummified animals.

I for one had no idea there would be anywhere near that many animals mummified. I was under the impression that only wealthy people were buried with their cats. So, it really came as a surprise that many of the animals the team is finding are dogs. It could be that there were also what we would call puppy mills where people could get dogs to mummify so they could send messages to the Gods.

They also have a project that had over a million other animals.

I guess, I missed something in history class. It could be that way back when I was in school, they either didn’t know as much or they just didn’t consider it something we needed to know.

Well, I don’t want you to be as dumb founded about animal mummification as I was so I suggest you go and check out the full story at Cardiff University academics unearth ancient Egyptian animal tombs.
