We were talking today about how many people are out looking to buy a plush stuffed Cuttlefish. I thought that it was kind of a strange toy to be popular. Heck, I didn’t even know much about the cuttlefish (which isn’t even a real fish) so, I did a little fact finding.
Now I know why they would be such a cool toy. They are like the master of disguises. They can change to look like just about anything around them. They are even smart. Well, they have to be pretty smart to be able to change colors as fast as they do. They also have little defense against predators so, they have to be able to outsmart them (Hide). They also know how to “work” the ladies.
Male cuttlefish will fight other males for a chance to mate. The male may also change its color to look like a female and trick another male away from the female.
There are 120 species of cuttlefish that have been found. When it comes to ocean animals, there is always a chance that humans have missed a few.
Cuttlefish have a total of 10 tentacles. 2 of the tentacles are longer and used mostly for grabbing food. These 2 tenacles are normally withdrawn if not being used to grab food. The other 8 arms have very strong suction cups and are used for hold food or to help move the cuttlefish along the bottom of the ocean.
The female cuttle fish lays about 200 eggs after mating.
I sure haven’t told all the cool facts about these amazing cuttlefish. I just wanted to give you enough info to get you started.
I also found this TED Talk that has some footage of cephalopods (squids, octopus, and cuttlefish).
Now I see why kids would think cuttlefish were so cool. They are like the Invisible Man, Super Man, Aqua Man and Spider Man all rolled into one.
