With Earth Day 2011 coming up on April 22, I thought it would be a neat idea to highlight a little fuzzy flying animal that needs some help. In fact this little creature is in dire need of saving. It is the life force behind our food source. Yes, I am talking about the bee!

Many people think about things like recycling, saving energy, planting trees…for Earth Day and those are all great things that everyone can do in their everyday life. But, since this site is about animals I needed to find something to help animals (which the earth desperately needs to keep the eco system healthy). It just so happened that with Spring coming to many places…bees are a perfect subject.

Honeybees have been on the decline for years and without bees…humans will not have many of the foods we need. Bees pollinate all kinds of fruits and vegetables that we eat everyday. Can you imagine a farmer trying to hand pollinate his acreage? I pollinate a few miniature fruit trees (potted) with a paint brush and that is fine…I sure couldn’t do more than a couple before I was worn out. I’m sure that bees would do a much better job than I do.

So, I found a site that has a couple of very easy ways to build Bee Houses. These houses are fancy or huge but, it could be a way to bring a few bees into your garden area. The houses also don’t mention that they are for honey bees so, not sure it honey bees would live in them. But, in the UK people are encouraging others to plant flowers in areas so bees can have a safe (non chemical laiden) place to feed and live. Heck, why not plant some wild flowers and build a bee house? It would be good for the environment and educational for kids. So check out Make a bee home or café!

And, while we are on the topic of bees…check out the trailer of a new documentary (Vanishing of the Bees) that will be showing in the USA, Europe, Australia and Asia that tells how the honey bees are disappearing and what that means to humans and the state of the Earth.

Vanishing of the Bees – Trailer from Bee The Change.

If you would like to see if and when a screening of the movie is coming to a city near you, visit Vanishing of the Bees. There you will also be able to find out more about the film, how to buy the DVD, and links to their Facebook page.

Go ahead and do something nice for the bees this Earth Day! Really, they are cute and they don’t mess with people!

Oh for all of us that have allergies to pollen…try getting yourself some locally grown honey. The locally grown honey is a great way for your system to learn how to tolerate the pollen. No kidding! Honey is also just so healthy in so many ways that you should find a local bee keeper and try it. You can support a local business and help your health. It also keeps the bees out of the unemployment line. ;-)
