Have you ever wondered what species of animals in the USA have been listed as Endangered or Threatened for the State you live in?
In fact you may be interested in what animals fall under these categories for other states also.

While searching for some other animal news today, I came across a site that will show you all the Endangered or Threatened Animals and Plants listed for each state. It was really a great find…kind of. The site is not really user friendly but, it works. What can I say…it’s a Government site and those never work as well as any other site. LOL!

There is only one way I got the site to show me different states list easily. You will go to http://ecos.fws.gov/tess_public/pub/stateOccurrenceIndividual.jsp?state=HI This will bring up the list of endangered plants and animal for the state of Hawaii. Now when you want to see the list for another state, you will need change the state initials at the end of the link.

See where the link says (state=HI), So just take off the HI and replace it with another state…you must capitalize both letters in the states initials. Sorry this is a pain. Maybe I should pay more taxes so they can make this site better…or not.

I put the link to Hawaii because of all the states I glance through it seemed to have the biggest list of (E)Endangered plants and animals. Now granted some of the species listed are bugs. I had not thought about how many bugs could be endangered or threatened and how they would play a role in the total health of the environment.

If you would like to know more about a species you can click the link next to its name. It will take you to a page with a map showing where the species is currently found. The same page will also link to the Federal Documentation of listing the particular species as threatened or endangered.

So stop over and check out what plants and animals in your state are protected. You also might use this site as an educational tool with your kids. If you are going to another state on vacation have the kids look up the state and know what to look for while you are out camping or hiking. They might just see something that later generations will never get to see if recovery doesn’t happen.
