We all know how much we hate those pesky little insects. And of course by that I mean, Ants. You know, those evil things that come and invade your house whenever they think they can? They come steal your leftover food you may have left on the floor (crumbs) or maybe they want come in and munch on YOU when you least expect it. Just to say, “Haha, we are taking over the world, and now your house”. But, a good exterminator, or some weird poison that you may have made will get rid of them. For a little while at least.

Having said that, no matter how many we get rid of in the world, or how hard we try, they are always going to be out there, and always going to come visit once in awhile. So, why not know some facts about your occasional house guest?

Do Ants Protect Themselves?

Ants can’t often protect themselves from ticked off, ant murdering humans, but they CAN protect themselves from other intruders. How? Well, for instance the “Big Wood Ant” from Europe, can literally squirt venom at it’s enemies. Now how cool is that? A heck of a deterrent if you ask me. Of course, not all ants can do that (only the really cool ones). Most ants just use there tiny, but painful jaws to attack. Those are what pinch you when you get bitten. And though ants are so much littler than us, it can sure hurt. Especially if you get bitten by allot, or maybe if you’re allergic to them. They can cause some serious damage. But, that’s how they have to protect themselves.

How Many Ants Can Live In A Nest?
Sometimes you can just be walking along, and you pause for a minute to look at something, and it’s a HUGE hill of ants. There are what seems like gazillions of them. Everywhere. And you might be like, “I wonder how many there actually are?”. Well, that all depends on the type of ants they are, how big the mound is… etc. But, it’s estimated that some nest can have millions living I them. Seems like a bit of a packed house, don’t you think? Can you imagine having to share an area with millions of people? But, some of the biggest nest are made by the Leaf Cutter Ants, there nest can also be up over 30 feet under the ground.

What Are The Most Dangerous Ants?
Did you know that Solider Ants are the most dangerous of them all? You get bitten a few hundred times by those, and you might not make it. They call them Marching Solider Ants because they will all get in a group line, and basically march. That’s how they get their food, they all work together as a team. When they attack something, they definitely go in for the kill, they spend no time messing around. So, be sure to steer clear of these crazies, or they might have you for dinner.

Why Do Some Ants Fly?
Have you ever seen a flying ant? Well ants only use their wings when they’re mating. They will actually mate in mid air. You may think that only the queen bee has wings, but most times, the queen has no wings. Once she has mated, her wings will fall off. Only full-grown ants have wings, and most of the workers never get them, as they never need them. So, now you now when you see a few flying ants, there up to no good.

Well, now that you know a few little facts about ants, you can feel like you are one with them. Or maybe that’s taking it to far. You will still probably dislike them, and still try and defeat them, by killing them all off. But, at least you can know more about them than they know about you.
