Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary located right outside of Las Vegas, Nevada had a devastating fire this morning.
The sanctuary is used for education about wildlife. They have mostly birds, It has housed large flightless birds including ostriches, emus and rheas, along with smaller species like finches, cockatoos, parakeets, macaws and parrots. They have also housed tortoises, horses, pot bellied pigs & many more common animals.
No humans were hurt during the fire but, they believe that around 250 birds died.
The people on site tried to get as many animals as possible out but, just did not have the ability to save them all.

UPDATE 3/22/2010
Gilcrease staff has now found that not as many birds as first thought were killed in the fire. It seems that the number of birds perished is 180 not 250.
I am sure they had to take time to do a real count as the morning of the report most of the staff was very upset.
They also lost the German Shepard dog that was the protection for the birds. I’m sure to many people would want to break in & possibly steal the exotic birds.
Fire investigators also ruled the fire as an accident caused by electrical wiring.
If you would like to make a donation or in you live in the area & can volunteer please call (702) 645-4224.
They have a video that shows pictures & some footage of Gilcrease Nature Sanctuary Fire Damage Be warned..Part of it has volume & part is just silent pictures. When it goes back & forth with sound it can be a bit startling if you have your speakers up loud.
