We have been hearing a good bit about the recent Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES) meetings that seemed to do very little. One problem that was debated was the endangering of sharks. They seemed to have gotton no help for protection in these meetings.

Shark fining is a huge problem. Back in November of 2009 George Knapp & the ITeam did a segment on the practice of shark fining. They showed footage of how the shark “meat” is gathered, what happens to the rest of the shark (they only want the fins), & how easy it is to buy the “illegal” food.

From everything I have read…shark fin soup has no flavor & has NO NUTRITIONAL value. So why is it in high demands in some cultures? Status! Yep, guess they figure you must be part of the fancy, rich, or famous to eat the stuff.

To loose sharks to such a useless thing is ridiculous! When the oceans don’t have the sharks to keep down populations of other fish or clean up the sick & dieing…the oceans balance will be so off wack & there will be no way to get it back.

You need to go over to I-Team: Sharks Slaughtered to the Brink of Extinction, they have the 6min video about shark fining & it is also at the same link to read the text version of the investigation.

I am sure there will be more about endangered sea creatures coming up. I think the public tends to forget about all the wonderful things that we can not see…they just happen to live under the water but, are still VERY important to the earths balance.

I just found out that the ITEAM won a Genesis Award in the category of News Series for their report on Shark Fin Soup

Every year, The Genesis Awards pays tribute to the major news and entertainment media for producing outstanding works that raise public awareness of animal issues. The 24th annual Genesis Awards was Saturday, March 20, 2010 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, Calif.
