Brazilian authorities thought they had found a poacher who had turned his life around for the good of the animals he had been killing. Research institutes and environmental groups welcomed his knowledge and tracking skills to help their conservation efforts. What they didn’t know is that the man referred to as Jaguar Tony may have not changed his ways. In fact he may have been using his inside information to do even more damage to the wildlife.

The Brazilian Federal Police raided a farm that put a dent on this man and his groups guided hunts. These men not only took “hunters” out for jaguars in the local area, they also arranged the hunt and killing of elephants, rhinos, hippos and other big game in Africa. Heck, they even provided taxidermy service so the “hunters” could have a trophy.

You can see the full details of this animal story at Brazil’s Operation Jaguar: Busting a Poaching Ring.

Although I don’t fully understand the conversions of monies with the fines these arrested men will get, I can say that it is not enough. I’m not sure that fines will deter this type of person from doing it again.

Do you think the punishment fits the crime?
