Buckley, a one year old Border Collie-Stafford shire Bull terrier mix dog, that was found mutilated in July of 2009 as a 8 week old puppy, has now become the poster dog for animal cruelty in Australia. Last week it was announced that Buckley will become the national face of adoption for abandoned dogs when a new set of stamps are released by the Australian Post. The Adopted and Adored stamp set will include five young dogs adopted from animal shelters throughout Australia.

Charges were recently dropped against the mentally ill 32 year-old man accused of cutting off Buckley’s ears and tail with scissors and leaving him for dead in a school yard in St. Albans and people throughout the world are outraged. As a result the RSPCA Inspectorate in Australia are calling for new laws to protect animals from owners with a history of mental illness.

The man, originally charged with torture and aggrevated cruelty, in addition to more than nine other charges, has remained unidentified due to public backlash. If charged and convicted, the man would have faced up to two years in jail and $28,000 in fines. In addition, the Magistrate has the power to ban people from owning pets for a ten year period of time. Since charges have now been dropped against the man, many fear he will be able to abuse other animals.

A Facebook website dedicated to Buckley named ‘Justice for Buckley’ now has over 200,000 members. This large group of citizens is demanding a law reform for maximum penalty for people found guilty of cruelty to animals.
Buckley was adopted last September after receiving plastic surgery and time for his wounds to heal. We wish him a long and happy life.

  1. What happened to Buckley is terrible. Yet, I do understand that sometimes people are mentally handicapped to the extent that they may not understand what they are doing.

It may be best to make sure that this particular person not be allowed any animals. I just don’t know as a huge fine or jail would be of any good for him, & it sure would not help Buckley.
