Recently discovered species of spider in Madagascar is found to spin a web up to 25 meters or more than 82 feet. They build their webs over water to catch the insects flying there. The strength of the silk produced by the spider is stronger than ever found before, the toughest biomaterial known to man tougher than Kevlar.
The name of the spider is Darwin’s Bark Spider, it spins a web that dwarfs the previous largest webs that were spun by the Orb spiders with some of the largest webs being only about 9 feet or so. The Bark spider builds an orb in its web so large it can capture up to 30 some prey at one time. I’m sure much food is needed to maintain the resources to produce such massive webs and maintain them.
There may be other arachnids that produce a stronger web silk not discovered yet. Researchers are saying out of the over 40 thousand arachnids that may produce 200 thousand types of silk, only a few dozen have actually been studied.
