Massachusetts has a new bill that could help save animals lives from accidental poisoning.
The new bill H 4285, is the Antifreeze Bill.
It will require that all antifreeze has a bittering agent added to it.
Most people know that antifreeze is deadly to any animal that drinks it (also toxic to humans so, don’t try it to see). It contains ethylene alcohol that affects the central nervous system, then the heart, and finally forming crystals in the kidneys . Pets only need a very small amount to cause extreme illness or death.
When I say a small amount, I mean small amount. Even a teaspoon is seriously toxic.
Antifreeze is not the only product you would find ethylene alcohol in but, it is the one that has a sweet taste. Therefor animals would possibly drink it if left in a can, spilled on a driveway, or even left out for the purpose of poisoning animals.
Now the H4285 bill has already passed the Massachusetts House and The Senate, now it is on its way to the Governor. I am betting it will be signed without a hitch.
You can see some stats as to how many animals this could have possibly saved if it had been done sooner at The Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (MSPCA).
This bill could also save the lives of children that may not be so interested in drinking freeze’s with a bittering agent in it.
