There is some good things being posted in animal news coming out of Mississippi. Seems law makers will be taking another look at a bill that was shut down last year.

Senate Bill 2127 (SB2127) will be coming up again for a vote. This bill will make it a felony to torture a vertebrate animal (guess worms and bugs are left on their own).  Last year it was shut down because to many people ( like the Farm Bureau) were afraid that once you let the animals have some rights to be safe from torture then all hell will break loose. You know how those animals are. They just don’t like people intentionally maiming them.

The law makers that do support the bill feel it will pass this time since the public has a better understanding of what it entails. Maybe the groups against the bill had gave people the impression that if you or your family were in danger then you still could not protect yourself?

Anyway, under the new law, animal abusers could face financial penalties of up to $10,000. An abuser could also have to pay for vet care, be prevented from owning another pet, put into psychologist care.

You can read Senate Bill 2127 for yourself.

I know that the law enforcement is behind this bill. I would think that they know How Animal Abuse and other Crimes are Related. They would likely want to know who is responsible for crimes against animals and try to stop it from become crimes against people.

  1. I am so thankful that this law is being considered again. It needs to go through this time. No more animal abusers getting away with a little slap on the wrist!!!

  2. I hope that the law enforcement agencies that are helping push this bill will inform people how it will benefit society. Too many people do not realize how animal abuse leads to other abuse.

  3. I understand some legislators do not think this bill will pass. “Well, this IS Mississippi.” As if that explains anything. Until people understand that this form of cruelty can escalate to include their own son or daughter, wife or husband — they will remain blind. Call your representatives and let them know we want law enforcement to be allowed to ACT!
