So many animals news stories that we link to are talking about a decrease in a particular species. It is not every day that we get to bring you an article that is showing a promising uprising in numbers.
Today we saw an article that is just that, it is talking about the number of North Atlantic right whales that have been spotted this year. There are very few of these awesome animals left and for surveyor to see calf’s is great news. You can see the article at Rare Right Whale Calf Spotting Good News for Endangered Beasts.
These North Atlantic Right whales are said to be facing extinction that may be in the near future. Their populations were taken so far down by whaling that they may never be able to recover. These whales have not been calfing in high numbers so even though they are now protected from whalers, their numbers are not really growing. The biggest problem these whales face is being hurt or killed by boats, ships, and getting entangled in fishing gear. Even though they can live 70 years that is only if they can avoid running into boats and if they can find enough food. I am sure that things like the Gulf Oil Spill don’t help these animal any. Of course we may never know how over fishing and pollution plays into their possible extinction. There numbers are already so low that we sure wouldn’t want to blame human actions for their demise (Sarcasm).
But, for now we need to be happy that they are still here and having calves. Hopefully we can figure out what they need to prosper before it’s to late.
