A huge thank you to Wired.com for bring a very cool site to my attention today for animal news!
They have an article titled Automated Cameras Show Rare Animals Online, Courtesy of the Smithsonian. They introduced us to the Smithsonian Wild site. Holy Molely!
I followed the link that the article provided over to Smithsonian Wild, where they have a “gazillion” pictures of animals in the wild. These animals were photoed by wildlife cameras around the globe. They are natural shots so, some of them are much better than others for sure. Some of the pictures are like a wildlife “Where’s Waldo”. The animals are almost hidded. Other pics have the animals face right up to the camera. Some of the images are dark, some have flash, but all are worth taking a look at.
The Cam page says there are 201,000 images of the wildlife…I did not go and count them so, I will just take their word for it. They have a cool list from A-Z of some of the different animals you can see pics of. If you want to feel like a beauty queen…then take a look at the long nosed pig. I LOVE all animals (almost) but, those long nosed pigs are about butt ugly. In fact their butts are cuter than their faces. ;-)
I checked out the Rhinoceros’ pictures and they are cute…for what they are.
The jaguar is Awesome. They have some pics of the cats during the day just walking along in the forest that you must see.
They have something called a Banded Palm Civet that is super cool looking. I had never heard of it before & if not for sites like this, I would have never seen one either.
Now, I could go on and on about the animals and their pictures but, am sure you want to get over there and check them out yourself. Be sure to come back and tell us what your favorite animal pictures were from the Smithsonian Wild Site.
Ah luv it! I didn’t know before that pandas had little lamps behind their eyes!
I thought some of those pictures were amazing. I saw animals that I had never heard of. I think the natural setting adds to it. Sure, some of the images are then blurry but, they are real wild animals that aren’t posing.
