The National Academy of Sciences has done another report of how invasive snake (anacondas and pythons) species are killing off everything in the Florida Everglades.
While some snake lovers and snake dealers do not want laws passed that disallow the importing of all snakes, something has to be done. To many pythons and anacondas reproducing up to 100 babies at a time will further destroy the Everglades. When these snakes get done killing all of the native species of mammals and other reptiles, the eco system will be screwed.
I know I have read that a reptile facility was the cause of many snakes being introduced into the wild after it was hit by a hurricane years ago. There have been other reports of animal smugglers that land in Florida and if they fear they are going to get caught, they just release all the animals. Then you have the people who buy these imported animals and figure out that they can’t take care of them so they just “let them go”. All of these things have left Florida in a mess.
I am not sure why animals were ever allowed to be imported. Many plants are not even allowed into the country and some plants are not allowed in certain states because of invasive species disease, and pest. Yet, we allow animals to not only be brought in but, then people are allowed to breed them. Hellooooo who would have ever guessed there would be a problem?
Oh that’s right…someone or group with lots of money probably got a few lobbyist to make sure that congress allowed them to keep importing, breeding, and making more money for pay offs.
Hell, why don’t we send the BLM down to the Everglades? The BLM will round up and kill off native wild horses for money. Maybe they could get rid of the non native snakes?
Anyway, you can read more about the issues in the Florida Everglades at In Florida Everglades, pythons and anacondas dominate food chain.
What do you think…send the BLM down there?
Move to the Everglades and start a snake skin purse factory?
Oh maybe a wild adventures tour for the real thrill seekers?
How would you handle the snake issues if if were up to you?
