Just last week I wrote a post about a terrible event that has been taking place in South Caroline called Bear Baiting. My post Bear Baying (cruelty) in South Carolina led to under cover footage of a bear being so mistreated that it could bring a grown man to tears. In fact I even wanted to hunt down law makers in South Carolina and find out why this type of “contest” would even be legal in their state. Ok truthfully, I wanted to smack them in the head to see why they had let this crap carry on. Now, I can calm down a bit. At least some in South Carolina got the message without any head smack.

South Carolina State Senator Joel Lourie announced plans to pre-file legislation to ban the practice of bear baying in South Carolina. He saw the video and was none to happy that this was taking place in his state. Senator Lourie has helped stop animal cruelty in SC before so, this is no “get my name in the news” type of crusade. I think he really does want his state to be an Animal Cruelty Free Zone.
Senator Lourie will have some help getting something done about the bear baiting. State Representative David Hiott is going to get law makers to pay attention to what this “sport” is and show them that it needs to be dealt with.
I am sure at some point in the near future we will see a site that has a pre written letter asking South Carolina Law Makers to out law Bear Baiting. I haven’t found any such letter request as of yet.
I just hope that when they do out law these events that the owners of the 21 bears (I think that is how many bear owning permits the DNR has issued in the state) will relinquish their bears to a rescue or sanctuary. I am not even sure what can be done with an adult bear that has no teeth or claws and has been tortured all of it’s life. There has to be some place that can show these animals compassion to finish out their days in peace.
I am so horrified that the sick people can torture these poor bears and are allowed to do so by the state. It’s so disgusting and I would like to do whatever I can to help stop this.
Its so barbaric it must stop now.
