You may have heard the story already about a 10 year old miniature Dachshund that is in a court battle to save his life. His name is Spork and here is a little about his story and links to sites where you can help him and his family.

August 2009, Spork went to his vets office, Jasper Animal Hospital in Lafayette, Colorado, for some dental work. This little 17 pound dog was more upset on this visit than normal. In fact he bit the Veterinary technician on the chin.

I am guessing that the bite did not do any horrific damage. Yet, this vet employee filed reports with animal control and Sporks owners were charged with, owning a vicious dog.

This case is still in court and Spork could be sentenced to death as a vicious dog.

I found Spork: ‘Vicious’ Weiner Dog Faces Death ( Video ) that will give you more details of the crazy story.

They have a petition that I believe will go to Lafayette, CO., prosecutor Ralph Josephson letting him know how ridiculous this court battle is. You can find the online petition at Save Spork Petition.

If you are on Facebook you can also meet others in Support of Spork.

I just am amazed that a vet tech would file a report like this. I have known other vet techs that get scratched and bit  by a wide variety of critters. Not because the animal is in any way mean…they are just frightened.

None of the articles listed the Vet techs name but, if I lived in that area, I would call and make sure she did not work for any vet I took my animals to. I will also be asking our vet what the protocol is at the office if one of my animals nips an employee.

Have any of your pets ever nipped or scratched a person?
What would you do if this was your pet?

SPORKs JUDGMENT DAY UPDATE  3/12/10

A Lafayette municipal court judge granted the dog a 6-month deferred prosecution. If Spork stays out of trouble, all charges will be dropped.

Sporks owners refuse to apologize for the accident. I know that some people may think they should just say sorry but in the article, Spork Gets ‘Vicious Dog’ Reprieve ,the lawyer for the owners (Tim & Kelly Walker) makes perfect sense.  They are stuck because if they Apologize then that could be seen as admitting their dog is vicious, which could lead to Sporks death.

What a mess!

I just hope Old Spork can manage to stay out of trouble for 6 months. For a Dachshund that could be hard so, lets just hope the trouble he gets into is harmless. ;)
