Just when you think you have seen all of the creatures that share our space…you find another one that you have never heard of.
Today while I was searching though Animal Stories I found a very cool picture that caught my eye. The story that goes with the pictures is just as fascinating.
Have you met the Osmia Avoseta?
Ok, I’ll take a wild guess that you answered no to that question.
The Osimia Avoseta is a bee. I would say that is not a bee like most people would think of. This one lives alone. It does not stay in a colony with a gazillion of its family members. It makes it own little cocoon like home.
Now, the picture that caught my eye earlier…is of that cocoon. They use flower petals to build it. They look like a piece of art. Some female bees make up to 10 of these nest. In each nest she only lays 1 egg. She also does more than just paste mud and petals together, these nest are designed to keep high humidity and hold the food for the larva.
You can go over and see more about these bees and their unique homes that they build in their part of the Middle East at Rare Bee Species Lives Alone, Makes Nest Out of Flower Petals.
