Just a few weeks ago the Bronx Zoo Cobra was Found after it had escaped its enclosure. It got to have a week of freedom. Well, they don’t think the cobra ever left the building so, it was a very limited freedom. It sure would have been a different (and more exciting) story if the cobra had gone out into the city streets like some other animals have.
Last year we had 2 stories about Zebras on the run in Sacramento. These animals really went out and stirred up the city while enjoying their freedom. What animal wouldn’t want to get away from the Ringling Brothers Circus? The only tricks they had to do while out on the run were to out maneuver the cars and the people trying to catch them. If animals could talk…they would have rights to a Disney movie.
There was also the story No Bulls for Brunch in Peoria, Illinois. Here we had 3 bulls running free. I’m not sure if anyone ever really figured out the who, what, when, & why of these 3 animals being out. I’m sure the woman whose hose they went into may not care how they got out…she probably just hopes if they do it again…they visit someone else.
So, animals escaping and making the news is not so rare. But what might be some of the other animal escapes that we didn’t hear about or have forgotten? Time has put out a nice list of the Top 10 Zoo Escapes with a sideshow and description of each escape. Some of the animals would have not been frightening but, others would have scared the pants off of people had they just “bumped into them”. Yeah, if I saw a rogue penguin…I’d be fine. In fact I would have been going nuts with a camera. BUT, coming across an orangutan or gorilla would have been a totally different story. I may have wet my pant and then ran screaming like a little girl.
So go take a look at some of these stories and be glad that you have not had to be the one to find the escaped animals. Ok, I still wouldn’t mind the penguin swimming in my tub. ;-)
